Miami International Airport (MIA) Information

About Miami Airport

Miami International Airport (MIA) is one of three airports in Miami, South Florida, and the major international airport in this area. It is situated about eight miles from Miami’s business center, neighboring Miami Springs and Virginia Gardens, and belongs to Miami-Dade County. MIA encompasses more than three thousand acres of land and brings up to $20 billion to Miami’s economy annually.

Today, MIA is among the top 40 busiest airports around the world and is ranked third in the United States for foreign flights after Los Angeles and New York. It is the busiest airport in Florida in terms of both overall plane traffic and traveler volume.

Miami Airport as a Hub

Miami International belongs to the biggest hubs in the USA, due to its proximity to many popular tourist sites in Florida. Moreover, it provides more takeoffs and landings to the Caribbean and Latin America than any other airport in the country, making it a crucial hub for travel between North and South America. MIA also runs a large number of flights to Europe and Asia. It handles up to 1 thousand operations per day to 150 destinations, in more than 40 countries worldwide.

In 2021, MIA’s passenger traffic amounted to 37 million people (24 million transferred within the country and 13 million internationally). Within the same year, it became a leading airport in the USA for managing international freight operations. MIA handled around three million U.S. tons of cargo in total.

More than 85 airlines currently operate at MIA, including Amerijet International, American Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, United, and Atlas Air. Foreign airlines include Air Canada, British Airways, JetBlue, Iberia, Etihad, Emirates, and Lufthansa. What’s more, Frontier Airlines, LATAM, and Avianca provide limited point-to-point routes from MIA.

MIA’s Development and Expansion

Miami City Airport was the name of the first airport that operated on MIA’s site. In 1928, Pan American Airways, a well-known airline at that time, built a facility next to it. The company used it as its official aerodrome. In the 1940s, a military aviation airfield was created nearby. Despite being two different airfields, in some documents, they were listed as one. Later, Pan Am was bought by Delta Airlines and moved to a different airfield, and the city administration acquired the facility and gave it a new name.

Over the past seventy years, MIA has undergone numerous improvements and expansions. These changes have become necessary due to the extreme growth rate of almost 7% which MIA has observed in its travelers: at this point, MIA has to serve almost 46 million travelers annually. The overall number of flight operations has reached 400 thousand, and air travel is on the rise. Along with repair projects, there are plans to expand the size of the facility by over 2.5 million square feet, including landing fields, taxi routes, and taxi lots. New storage space will cover an additional 3 million square feet for running cargo operations.

Terminals and Concourses

MIA has 3 terminals (North, Central, and South) with 8 concourses in total. All facilities are located in the same building and boast a line of stores and eateries. Each terminal leads directly to a parking lot that makes it easy to access the airport. You may want to check a detailed Miami Airport Map to have a proper understanding of the location.

  • North Terminal (Blue or Terminal N) cconsists of three levels interconnected by elevators. It houses only Concourse D, leading to 45 gates. The arrival facility can serve around 2 thousand passengers daily. Concourse D manages local and international takeoffs and landings. American Airlines is a primary air carrier in this location. As the length of Concourse D is one mile, Skytrain transport services are offered to shorten the distance. This automated transfer covers the entire lobby and stops at four stations, equally distributed across a line.
  • Central Terminal (Yellow or Terminal C) houses Concourses E, F, and G, with a total of 52 gates. It manages a great number of local flights, but runs no international flights. At MIA, it is the only terminal of its kind. In the majority of cases, JetBlue flights are handled at Central Terminal.
  • South Terminal (Red or Terminal S) includes Concourse H and J. Concourse H serves domestic and international flights, while Concourse J is used only for international ones. The majority of arrivals and departures are carried by Delta Airlines.

All terminals are open 24-hours a day and united by two automated walkways on Level 3:

  • MIA Mover is a tramway, running from the Main Terminal to the Intermodal station.
  • Skytrain is another internal transport service that travels every three minutes.
